Sport and technology have been lifelong passions for Troy, who now joins EngageRM as a Junior Developer. It was during his first stint at university that Troy decided to switch majors into IT, and he hasn’t looked back since. He joins our team ready to develop and refine his skills and help our clients in any way he can.
Has sport had a big influence on your life?
TP: Sport plays a very important role in my life, with soccer being a particular favourite. My dream when I was younger, like most kids, was to become a professional soccer player but as I’ve grown, I started coaching kids which I loved. I also swam and competed in cheerleading as well, so you could say I had a very sporty upbringing!
Have you always had an interest in tech and knew you wanted to work in the field?
TP: I’ve always had a passion for technology, I found it fascinating quite early on and video games opened up the whole world of customisation. That was when I really dug into the world of tech and gained a basic understanding of how things work.
What led to your move into IT and your decision to study it at a higher level?
TP: When I began higher education, I was enrolled as a marketing major, but I soon felt like I wanted to change majors to reflect a career that better suited me, and that led to the switch into IT. I was already interested in technology and felt like there would be some great career opportunities in that space, so the switch felt like the right choice.
How did you find out about the open role at EngageRM?
TP: I worked for Gymnastics Australia for around a year and in that time the agreement between EngageRM and GA was signed, so that was how I first encountered the business. I met Shaun (Senior Business & Data Analyst) there as well, and when I stepped away from my role at GA, my manager referred me to Shaun and the rest is history.
When you did have those initial discussions, what drew you into the role?
TP: For me it was about how the technology and platform can transform the impact and management of sport. In my opinion, sport has taken a little more time to keep up with all the technological advancements and the EngageRM platform is unlike anything I’ve seen, it can really help the industry keep up with the world.
What are you aiming to achieve with the work that you do?
TP: First thing that comes to mind is that I want to develop my skills. I’m still studying at university because I feel a little underqualified, and EngageRM seems like a place where I can really build on my skills. I’m also just excited to learn all about the platform and what it can offer our clients.
What excites you the most at the moment?
TP: I’m excited to meet new people and get to know my colleagues, everyone has been so warm and welcoming over email and on LinkedIn, so I’m looking forward to building on that already great start.
